Cookie Policy
Which cookies and similar technologies GeoMed and its partners use, what they do, how long they last and how you can control them.
Last updated: 25 October 2026
This policy explains how GeoMed ("we", "us") uses cookies and similar technologies on geomed.cc. It should be read together with our Privacy Policy.
What are cookies?
Cookies are small text files that a website places on your device. Similar technologies include local storage (settings saved in your browser) and pixels or scripts that collect information when a page loads. We refer to all of these as "cookies" in this policy.
- First-party cookies are set by geomed.cc.
- Third-party cookies are set by other companies whose services we use, such as Google for advertising.
- Session cookies are deleted when you close your browser; persistent cookies remain until they expire or you delete them.
Categories of cookies we use
1. Strictly necessary cookies
These make the site work and keep it secure. They do not require consent, and the site may not work properly without them.
| Cookie | Set by | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| csrftoken | GeoMed | Security: protects the contact, newsletter and comment forms against cross-site request forgery | Up to 1 year |
| sessionid | GeoMed | Keeps editors signed in to the content management system; not set for ordinary readers | Until sign-out or up to 12 hours |
| messages | GeoMed | Shows a one-time confirmation after you submit a form | Until the next page loads |
| __cf_bm | Cloudflare | Distinguishes people from automated bots to protect the site from attack | 30 minutes |
| cf_clearance | Cloudflare | Records that you passed a security check, if one was shown | Up to 1 year |
2. Preference cookies and storage
These remember choices you make so the site works the way you prefer. They contain no personal information beyond the choice itself.
| Name | Type | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| gm-theme | Cookie | Remembers light or dark mode | 1 year |
| gm-emergency-region | Cookie and local storage | Remembers the country you chose so the correct emergency number appears on every page | 1 year, or until you clear browser data |
3. Advertising cookies
GeoMed is free to read because it shows advertising through Google AdSense. Google and its advertising partners use cookies and similar technologies to:
- show advertisements, and limit how often you see the same one;
- personalise advertisements based on your visits to this and other websites, where permitted;
- measure how advertisements perform and detect fraudulent clicks and invalid traffic.
Common Google advertising cookies include names such as __gads, __gpi, IDE, DSID, test_cookie and NID, set on domains such as google.com, doubleclick.net and googlesyndication.com. Their names and durations are controlled by Google and may change; most last between a few minutes and 13 months. See how Google uses cookies in advertising.
Where consent is required by law (for example in the UK, the European Economic Area and Switzerland), advertising cookies used for personalisation are only set after you agree through the consent message shown on the site. If you decline, you may still see non-personalised advertisements, which use cookies only for purposes such as frequency capping, fraud prevention and aggregated measurement.
Analytics
GeoMed does not currently use a separate analytics service such as Google Analytics. If we add one, this policy will be updated first.
Third-party content delivery
To load quickly, the site requests typefaces from Google Fonts and standard code libraries and icons from jsDelivr. These services do not set cookies through our pages, but they do receive your IP address and browser details when the files load, as any website you connect to does.
Calculators
Information you type into our calculators is processed on your device and is not stored in cookies or sent to us.
How to control cookies
- Consent choices: where a consent message is shown, you can change your choice at any time using the privacy or cookie settings link provided with it.
- Google personalised ads: visit Google Ads Settings to turn off personalised advertising.
- Industry opt-outs: visit www.aboutads.info/choices or, in Europe, www.youronlinechoices.eu.
- Your browser: most browsers let you view, block and delete cookies and site data, block third-party cookies, or browse privately. Look in the browser's privacy or security settings. Blocking strictly necessary cookies may stop forms from working.
Changes to this policy
We will update this policy when we change the cookies we use. The date at the top shows when it last changed.
Legal basis for cookies
Under the ePrivacy rules that apply in the UK, the European Economic Area and some other countries, cookies that are strictly necessary for a service you have requested may be used without consent. All other cookies, including advertising cookies used for personalisation, require your prior consent where those rules apply. Where we rely on consent, you may withdraw it at any time, and withdrawal does not affect the lawfulness of earlier processing. Elsewhere, we rely on our legitimate interests in operating, securing and funding the Site, subject to your right to opt out.
Retention of information collected through cookies
Information collected through our own cookies is retained only for the duration shown in the tables above. Information collected through third-party cookies is retained by the relevant third party under its own policies. Personal information collected through cookies is otherwise handled in accordance with our Privacy Policy.
Effects of disabling cookies
| If you block | Effect |
|---|---|
| Strictly necessary cookies | Forms such as contact, newsletter and comments may stop working, and security protections may block your requests |
| Preference cookies | Your theme and emergency-number choices will not be remembered between pages or visits |
| Advertising cookies | You will still see advertisements, but they will be less relevant to you and may be repeated more often |
Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control
The Site does not currently respond to "Do Not Track" browser signals, because there is no agreed industry standard for doing so. Where the law requires a Global Privacy Control signal to be treated as an opt-out of the sale or sharing of personal information, we honour it as described in our Privacy Policy.
